Performing Arts Center Named After College Musical Director

A Westchester County High School is honoring the former director of its theater program 鈥� who also directs the musicals at Dominican College 鈥� by naming its Performing Arts Center after him. The Lakeland Central School District Board of Education voted听 on January 21, 2016, to rename the Walter Panas High School Performing Arts Center after Dr. James A. Filippelli. 听Dr. Filipelli taught English for more than 35 years at the high school and retired last June. 听He continues working as an adjunct instructor at Dominican College, where he has also taught for 36 years. 听At Dominican College, Dr. Filipelli teaches classes in communications and theater.听

The move to rename the center came after a former Walter Panas High School student started an online petition that garnered more than 900 signatures. Dr. Filippelli said he is humbled, flattered and honored. 鈥淚 share this honor with the countless number of students, the administrators, the teachers, the community members, anyone who ever stepped foot in that place, or performed on the stage 鈥� backstage, lighting, scenery, costumes, anything.听 I share with them, because I couldn鈥檛 do it alone, 鈥�听 he said.

Dr. Filippelli is now working with Dominican College students rehearsing for the March 11 and March 12 performances of Kiss Me Kate.听 Tickets will go on sale a few weeks before the performance.听

Local business leaders gathered at Dominican College on January 15, 2016, to hear what senior leaders from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York had to say.

Joseph Tracy is the Executive Vice President and Senior Advisor to the President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He said that many Americans were surprised that it took so long to reverse the job losses of the recession. 鈥淭he other bit of folklore is that the stronger the downturn, the faster the recovery 鈥� you had these v-shaped recessions and recoveries.  We just didn鈥檛 experience that,鈥� he said.

Tracy explained that the recovery took longer because of a changing economy, labor force, and demographics.

Jason Bram, Research Officer, Regional Analysis Function, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, gave a more regional perspective on the economy. He cautioned that the unemployment rates don鈥檛 tell the full story.  While U.S. unemployment is generally at the same levels as before the recession, labor participation is lower.  鈥淲hat that means is that the unemployment rate is lower not completely because there are more and more people working,鈥� said Bram,  鈥渂ut to some extent because there are fewer people looking for work or people who are what we call 鈥榰nderemployed.鈥欌��

Bram said that the economy of New York State has outperformed the nation, and New York City has been the leader in the State.

Dominican College Team Travels to El Salvador for Service Mission

The team of two administrators and five students traveled to the rural village of Sol Naciente to help relieve poverty and promote education. The summer camp in Sol Naciente was founded by a Dominican Sister, Sr. Flor Buruca, O.P., of Amityville, NY, a native of El Savador.听 With the help of others, Sr. Flor has also built a chapel in the village, established an after-school program, and provided care packages for those in need.听

This year, the College administrators on the trip are Vice President of Institutional Advancement Dorothy Filoramo, who also serves as President of the Pearl River Rotary Club and Director of Residence Life Ryan Gorman, a Pearl River Rotary Club Member as well. While in El Salvador, they are partnering with the San Miguel Rotary Club to work on a water purification project.

The Dominican College students on the trip are Sarah Baradaran-Noviri, Kayla Grodzicki, Kiara Rivera, Patricia Simmons, and Sade Solan-Bennett.

This is the third year that Dominican College has sent a team to work at the summer camp in Sol Naciente. In El Salvador, the dry season from November through April is known locally as 鈥渟ummer,鈥�听 even though the country is north of the equator.听

Acclaimed Orchestra Holds Christmas Concert December 6

The popular Dominican College Christmas Concert featuring the Reverend Alphonse Stephenson and the Orchestra of St. Peter by the Sea will be held on Sunday, December 6, 2015, at 3 p.m. in the Hennessy Center, 495 Western Highway in Blauvelt.听

鈥淭he College is very grateful to be able to bring forty classically-trained musicians to perform a holiday concert worthy of Carnegie Hall to our community,鈥� said Mary Lichtman, Director of Special Events. 听“This annual event has become a treasured tradition at the College that so many people look forward to.”听

Tickets for the concert are priced at $30 for General Admission, $25 for seniors and veterans and $20 for students with a school ID.听 Concert tickets include a post-performance dessert reception.听 In addition, a听听Holiday Buffet will be held in the Granito Center at 1 p.m. before the concert, at a cost of $20 per person.听

Former Publisher of Inc. Magazine Shares His Business Insight

The former Publisher of Inc. Magazine John Tebeau talked about business personalities at a recent forum sponsored by the Palisades Institute.

The former Publisher of Inc. Magazine shared his business insight at the Palisades Institute Forum on November 17, in the Lawrence Room of Rosary Hall. 听John Tebeau talked to the business leaders and students in attendance about what makes a good leader and the different types of work personalities. 听听

Tebeau said throughout his career he has seen leadership styles in all shapes and sizes.听 听鈥淣ever underestimate who it is you are talking to. 听Every relationship and personality you need to take seriously,鈥� he said.听

Tebeau then听explained the work-type personality theory of Les McKeon, who is the President and CEO of Predictable Success and has started more than 40 companies.听 McKeon believes that everyone who participates in group or team work tends to act in one of three naturally-occurring styles:听 visionary, operator or processor.听 Visionaries generate creative ideas.听 Operators translate those ideas into tasks and 鈥済et stuff done.鈥�听 Processors are compelled by data and like to bring order to the situation. The problem, said Tebeau, is that these three work personalities don鈥檛 鈥減lay well together in the sandbox.鈥�

Tebeau said that for a team to be successful, one of the听team players must also be a synergist 鈥� focused primarily on what is best for the enterprise. A synergist must be good at time management, priority management, crisis management and delegation.听

Symposium Educates Parents and Health Care Professionals 星空传媒 Concussions

Parents, health care professionals, and nursing students listened to top experts on concussions during Dominican College鈥檚 Healthcare Symposium entitled 鈥淐oncussions: What You Need to Know鈥� on Monday, November 16 in the Prusmack Center.听 听听

The evening symposium was moderated by Dr. N. Noel Testa, Former Clinical Professor of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, NYU Langone Medical Center, and a Consultant with the Department of Education NYC, Public School Athletic League.听 Dr. Testa urged those in attendance to become educated and find out what kind of concussion programs their school has.听 听听鈥淚 am asking all of you, as parents, guardians and educators to get yourself involved,鈥� 听he said.听” You鈥檝e got to go into the schools.听 You鈥檝e got to ask what is going on.鈥�

The experts stressed that a concussion may not cause you to lose consciousness, and it may not be detected by an MRI. Coaching staff should be aware that the signs of a concussion include an athlete who appears dazed or stunned, is confused about an assignment or moves clumsily.听 Athletes should be aware of symptoms including a headache, nausea, balance problems, double vision, and confusion.听

One of the panelists, Dr. John Galluci, who is the Medical Coordinator of Major League Soccer and the President of JAG Physical Therapy, said that awareness of concussions has increased greatly, 听鈥淲hat this has really done 鈥� and I call it the concussion revolution 鈥� is put healthcare first now in sports.鈥�听 Dr. Gallucci said the team approach is critical and nurses, certified athletic trainers, physical therapists and doctors need to advocate every day.听

This is the third annual Healthcare Symposium presented by Dominican College.听

Basketball Coach Joe Clinton Inducted into Union College Athletics Hall of Fame

Dominican College Director of Athletics and Head Men鈥檚 Basketball Coach Joe Clinton was inducted into the Union College Athletics Hall of Fame on November 14, 2015.

Clinton is a 1983 graduate of Union College and traveled up to Schenectady, NY, with his family for the ceremony.听 鈥淚t was really a nice night.听 All my buddies from college, my roommates, my teammates and my coach came back,鈥� said Clinton. 听鈥淚t was good reminiscing.鈥�

At Union College, Clinton was a standout on the basketball court and set the all-time assists record as a junior, 听finishing his career with 556 assists, while also owning the single season and game records for most assists with 182 and 15 respectively.听 In addition, Clinton graduated as the third highest all-time scorer with 1,270 points, a mark that now ranks 11th.

A two-year team captain, Clinton helped the Dutchmen to an overall record of 20-4 and a NCAA tournament berth his 听senior year.听 Clinton was also a great baseball player, and played for the Dutchmen in 1982 and 1984.

It鈥檚 been an exciting year for Clinton , who was inducted into the Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame back in April.听 Clinton is also a member of the 听Hall of Fame at Albertus Magnus High School in Bardonia.

Upcoming Symposium Educates 星空传媒 Concussions

The Third Annual Healthcare Symposium 鈥淐oncussions: Everything You Need to Know鈥� will be held on Monday, November 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Anyone involved in youth sports will want to take part in this interesting and informative evening, which will feature a panel of experts and open discussion. Physicians, coaches, athletic directors, athletic trainers, nurses, and parents are all invited to attend.

The moderator of the event will be Dr. N. Noel Testa, Former Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at NYU Medical Center. The keynote address will be delivered by Dennis Cardone, DO, Associate Professor at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at听NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases.

Attendees will learn about the epidemiology of concussions, on-field assessment, post- concussion syndrome, rehabilitation and therapy, guidelines for returning to school, injury prevention, and protective equipment.

Scholarship Dinner Honors Students and Their Benefactors

Freshman Darian Fernandez spoke at the Scholarship Recognition Dinner.

The 20th Annual Scholarship Recognition Dinner was held on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at the Casa Mia Manor House in Blauvelt to honor students and their generous benefactors.

Dorothy Filoramo, V.P. of Institutional Advancement noted that the event had grown from six scholarships being awarded to 14 recipients in 1995 to 40 scholarships being awarded to 82 students this year. 鈥淭hat is amazing growth and a commitment of our donors in the future of you, our Dominican College students,鈥� she said.

Student speaker, Darian Fernandez, said his experience at Dominican College has been completely positive and gave a lot of credit to his biology professor Dr. Bernadette Connors. 鈥淏ecause of her, I have been fortunate enough to attend a lunch with our College鈥檚 Dean Nowak, participate in a Trees for Tribs planting, attend seminars, have the potential to attend scientific conferences, shadow her research on the Sparkill Creek contamination problem and much more,鈥� he said.

Fernandez is one of six freshmen at Dominican College who received a new 4 year biology scholarship, made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Priceline.com CEO Speaks at Dominican College

The Chief Executive Officer of the travel discount website Priceline.com, Paul J. Hennessy, was the guest speaker at the Palisades Institute 25th Anniversary Celebration on October 8, 2015.

Hennessy, a 1992 graduate of Dominican College, was appointed to the position in April after holding a variety of jobs within the Priceline Group over the past 20 years, including Chief Marketing Officer at the very successful Bookings.com. During his speech, he said he has instituted a five pillar strategy at Priceline.com, represented by the acronym CLIMB 鈥� customers, learning, innovation, momentum and belief.

Hennessy explained what he means by belief. 鈥淲e needed to believe in something bigger. We needed to believe that we actually made a difference.听 And we needed to believe that we could make great products at scale and speed,鈥� he said. 鈥淏y the way, we needed to believe that we could operate outside of the U.S.鈥�

That CLIMB acronym has become part of the culture of Priceline.com. 鈥淕uess what? We are starting to turn the corner.听 People are actually starting to believe.听 They are starting to like the new pace.听 They are engaging our customers and everyone feels great,鈥� he said.

Hennessy spoke in the Lawrence Room of Rosary Hall during the evening reception celebrating 25 years since the founding of the Palisades Institute. The Palisades Institute was founded in 1990 as part of Dominican College to assist businesses, government, and not-for-profit groups in applying the principles of quality, leadership and ethics by offering seminars and workshops.
