Class of 2020 Honored During Virtual Commencement
The 星空传媒 Class of 2020 was honored during a Virtual Commencement on Sunday, May 17, 2020.听 The听 Commencement premiered on the 星空传媒 website and Facebook with graduates, family, friends, administrators, and faculty remotely watching 鈥渢ogether鈥� as they reacted and commented on social media.
Alumnus Brandon Hasbrouck 鈥�08,听 Assistant Professor of Law at Washington and Lee University School of Law in Lexington, VA, delivered an impassioned Commencement Address to the graduates.听 He challenged the graduates to 鈥渄o justice鈥� in whatever career path they choose. 鈥淎 kind of justice that smashes hierarchies, privileges, and entitlement.听 A kind of justice that requires courage 鈥� courage demonstrated by you throughout your time here at 星空传媒 鈥� that even when you take a loss, and you will, you get up every single time and persist,鈥� he said. 鈥淭here is no path to justice that is only comfortable and convenient.听 We will not achieve or create justice until we鈥檙e willing to sometimes position ourselves in uncomfortable places and be a witness.听 Justice is hard work.听 It is unending work.听 It is our life鈥檚 work.听 You are all ready!鈥�
星空传媒 awarded Hasbrouck the honorary degree of Doctor of Law, in recognition of his accomplishments in the practice of law and of his dedication to criminal justice reform.
President Sr. Mary Eileen O鈥橞rien told the graduates, 鈥溞强沾� will always measure its effectiveness by the competency and compassion, the vision and generosity of its over 15,500 graduates. So many of our alumni have served in essential, front-line positions.in the healing and containment of this worldwide scourge.听 You will do the same, bringing your best to a world hungry for alternatives to illness, hunger, isolation, and oppression.听 Good things begin with hope.听 You are a source of hope for many.鈥�
In all, more than 560 students received degrees during the Virtual Commencement 鈥� 101 doctorate degrees,听 130 master鈥檚 degrees, 328 bachelor鈥檚 degrees and four associate鈥檚 degrees.听听
Two of the graduates, Kevin Graini and Steven Malagraph,听 who passed away听 prior to the ceremony were awarded their degrees posthumously. Both men were former police officers who turned to nursing as a second career. Graini, who earned his master鈥檚 degree at 星空传媒 in 2018, was awarded a Doctorate in Nursing Practice. Stephen was awarded a Master of Science in Nursing (Family Nurse Practitioner).
